The Boy Scouts of America Centennial Commemorative Coin Act (Public Law 110-363), signed into law on October 8, 2008, authorizes the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue up to 350,000 silver dollar coins in commemoration of the centennial anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.   As authorized, the United States Mint will produce silver dollar coins in proof and uncirculated qualities. Surcharges from this commemorative coin program are authorized to be paid to the National Boy Scouts of America Foundation, which will make funds available to local councils in the form of grants for the extension of scouting in hard-to-serve areas.

Scouting for Change Coin Drive

The Central Florida Council’s 100th Anniversary Service Project, Scouting for Change – Coin Drive, is underway! Ed Haddock, Chairman of the 100th Anniversary Service Project, challenged all of the Central Florida Scouts, Parents and Scouters to participate in the Anniversary Celebration by collecting a minimum of 20 quarters. Coin boxes and leader guides for each unit were handed out at the November Roundtable.  Nearly 500 units have held their kickoff and are gathering quarters to help build schools in Africa to commemorate our 100th anniversary.

Scout Art Eyed, Disappointment Follows

Disappointment. That was the general sentiment of the United States Commission of Fine Arts when it reviewed designs proposed for a new Boy Scouts of America commemorative silver dollar.  "The commission voiced a general disappointment with the quality of the designs, in particular the renderings of the human figures," said Commission Secretary Thomas Luebke.
The commission met June 18 in Washington, D.C.
